As an Addy fan myself, really enjoyed this read. Reading Addy in 5th grade sparked my love for literature about people who look like me.

Addy was an AMERICAN girl hit me a little harder than I anticipated on this Wednesday night. “Black history is American history. We are more American than the remembrance of a country we do not know”. Whew 😮‍💨. This made me think of this line from a spoken word poem I wrote a few years back. Just wow. Thanks for writing this.

Exactly! It’s so important that we point this out. We are American history!

Saving this for my weekend reading to savor it. I also had an Addy doll and I think her story really helped me understand some of the complexities of slavery as a child. I also loved when she learned her letters and she and her Mom baked different letter cookies as they learned to read together. omg this has unlocked such a core memory for me! 😭

Addy’s holiday story is one of my favorites out of the collection and I look forward to reading it every year. I think out of all the holiday stories it truly represents the “True Meaning of Christmas” - selflessness and hope for a bright year to come.
